Kenan Verbakel

As both a filmmaker and a diver, I felt a responsibility to capture this underwater reality and share it through a cinematic lens. My aim was to create a visually immersive experience that reveals both the beauty and the fragility of this world. I hope the film not only informs but also moves people—to see the Mediterranean not as a distant sea, but as a living, changing entity that demands our attention and care. Kenan Verbakel is a Dutch documentary filmmaker and professional diving instructor. Having lived in Turkey for the past 17 years, he grew up surrounded by the unique nature of the Mediterranean, developing a deep connection to the sea. Combining his background in Cinema and Television studies with his expertise in the underwater world, Kenan tells stories with both scientific accuracy and visual poetry. Passionate about marine conservation and environmental awareness, his work explores the fragile relationship between humans and nature. His debut documentary, Beyond Suez - The Changing Mediterranean, examines the human-induced changes reshaping the Mediterranean ecosystem, blending scientific insight with cinematic storytelling. Kenan continues to develop projects focused on ecological change, marine biology, and human impact. From behind the diving mask to the global screen, he aims to bring the stories of the sea to audiences around the world.
