The Mediterranean Sea is undergoing a silent transformation. Beyond Suez explores the ecological upheaval triggered by invasive species entering through the Suez Canal. As lionfish, rabbitfish, and
others reshape underwater life, ancient ecosystems teeter on the edge.
Filmed along the Turkish coast, with insights from divers, marine biologists, and fishermen, this documentary reveals a sea caught between resilience and collapse. It’s a cinematic journey into an
evolving marine world—both beautiful and alarming.
As a diver, I have spent countless hours submerged in the Mediterranean Sea—watching, exploring, and connecting with its extraordinary life. Over the years, I began to notice changes. Familiar species
became harder to find, while strange, unfamiliar fish began to dominate the waters I thought I knew so well. This film was born out of that personal experience, driven by a deep concern for the silent
transformation happening beneath the surface.
Beyond Suez - The Changing Mediterranean is more than just a documentary about invasive species; it is a reflection of our impact on fragile ecosystems. The Suez Canal, once a symbol of human progress
and connection, has become an unexpected gateway for ecological imbalance. I wanted to tell this story because it is happening quietly, out of sight, yet its consequences ripple far beyond the sea.
