Mevlana'nın Mesnevi'sinde yer alan Padişah ve Cariye Kıssası'ndan ilham alan hikaye, Karadeniz'de kırk yıl boyunca, dağ evinde tek başına yaşayan Marife’yi anlatır. Marife aşık olduğu İlyas'la evlenme
planları yaparken aniden hastalanır. Bu hastalık Marife'yi gizliden seven Yahya'nın İlyas'ın gerçek yüzünü ortaya çıkarmak için hazırladığı bir oyundur. İlyas hastalıkla yüzü çirkinleşen Marife’yi
terk edip, İstanbul’a gider. Marife de öfke dolu bir inzivaya çekilir. Yıllar sonra İlyas'ın oğlu Ateş, babasının cenazesiyle geri döner. Babasının vasiyeti Marife'nin bahçesine gömülmektir.
Marife, who lives in a small village at the Black Sea, is abandoned by her lover on the eve of her wedding. After this incident, she, who has condemned herself to a forty-years seclusion, will face a
great confrontation with herself and the past when a coffin comes to her door one morning.
“Think you're escaping and run into yourself. Longest way round is the shortest
way home.” James Joyce That's how Ilyas chose the longest way, knowing exactly
that he would return, when he saw the wounded face of Marife and abandoned his
childhood crush - Death. I intend to lead the audience to a quest by making them
ask the questions of "What is true love?", "What is death?" and "What is reunion?"
through a filmed "heart and soul" story, inspired by the first story of Rumi's
immortal work Masnavi (The Tale of the Sultan and His Concubine), placed into
the heart of the impressive geography of the Black Sea region. In this narration,
each character is supposed to represent an emotion, an element, or a concept. In
the story, constructed with a parallel narration of the past and present, the
events are interwoven with the reality of the seasons. In my first feature-length
film, “DERUN”, the actors and the actress (Marife-Ilyas [Ateş] -Yahya) will play
both the past (40 years ago) and the present parts of the characters. They will
be aged with a special make-up technique. The reason why I prefer the same
actors and the actress to play both periods is my emphasis on reality and
naturalness. Making use of the natural environment and nature in order to
reflect the situations, living spaces and seasons with its overall reality will
serve the main purpose of the film. In particular, my top priority is to avoid
artificiality. While narrating a 40-year love story in the Black Sea geography,
inspired by Masnavi, I dream of stimulating each and every audience to ask "What
is true love?" and finding the answer in her/his own world.
