İsmail Kün, the founder of Tarsus Antik Sahaf Bookstore, is an important example of an independent bookstore, which changes and transforms the reading culture, observes the reader tendencies, and undertakes a voluntary mission in Anatolia with the books he recommends, the talks, book signings and workshops he organizes. Focusing on the story of Kün, who clings to life with books, to establish and keep his bookstore alive, the documentary traces the intellectual traces of this land by addressing the great transformation of Turkish publishing in the last thirty years, the sector with all its stakeholders, the changing reader profile, and the sales of books. The documentary, which includes the views of the parties that make up the publishing ecosystem, is not a lament for an endangered or endangered group, but a memory refresher study, a collective thought experiment for the coming days, aiming to highlight the important mission undertaken by the independent bookstore itself. The Bookstore is a visual fieldwork that aims to discuss the relationship between independent reading, publishing, and bookselling.

Founded by İsmail Kün, Tarsus Antik Sahaf Bookstore is one of the bookstores that changes and transforms the reading culture and assumes a great mission in the city of Tarsus which is a historic city in south-central Turkey, with a history of 6,000 years. İsmail is an independent bookseller in this city and he recommends books to his customers in his store and via his social media accounts. By organizing events with authors, he shapes the reading culture of the city. This documentary focuses on the story of Kün as he works to keep alive Antik Sahaf Bookstore. In the documentary, the audience will learn about the life of İsmail Kün and the idea behind independent bookstores. The Bookseller is a visual thought experiment about being an independent bookseller. I owe my background as a reader, publisher and writer to indie bookstores, and I have been working on the issue of indie bookstores for many years. I think İsmail Kün’s bookstore which is in Mersin, Tarsus, known as the city of Saint Paulus in south-central Turkey, is a very good example of independent bookstores with its promoting reading culture, creating new readers from all ages as well as giving a place for people to socialize using books and reading. It’s a cultural island and a bridge. I wanted to share this unique example as a documentary with the audience as it represents the culture of independent bookstores in Turkey. İsmail Kün’s bookstore is a good answer for people who ask, “Why would I buy a book from a bookstore if I can buy the same book for a much lower price via internet?” He shows that we should buy books from independent bookstores because they don’t only sell books but also sell their knowledge about books, they let us meet with writers and books we haven’t encountered before, trigger our curiosity about new titles, and give us new notions of reading and sharing. By buying a book from an independent bookstore, you get to become a member of a “secret, special, emotional club”. I’ve been working on the issue for many years, had interviews with many different independent bookstores from all over Turkey for newspapers and magazines, wrote the very first report about independent bookstores in Turkey and found out that they always had the very similar problems. So, taking İsmail’s bookstore as an example and discussing it with all aspects (fixed price, whether the independent bookstores’ time to die has come or not, the romantic and nostalgic approach to bookstores and how or if we should change it, the new generation and their relationship with bookstores, solidarity between bookstore owners, and the need for an association in Turkey for them) leads the audience to question the problems all bookstores face. I am an editor myself, so I will tell his story with the best way I know: Filming like editing a book. I made a documentary about Antik Sahaf Kitabevi and his owner İsmail Kün because I believe the only chance to read, publish and share independently is for independent bookstores to be vivid and strong. I made this documentary for an independent future.
