Ara Güler'i Konu Alan 'İstanbul'un Gözü' Belgeseline Amerika'da 'En İyinin İyisi' Ödülü
Ara Güler hakkında hazırlanan belgesel film "İstanbul'un Gözü", dünya prömiyerinin yapıldığı Washington DC Bağımsız Film
Festivali'nde tüm yapımlar arasında "en iyinin iyisi" ödülünü kazandı.
Türkiye'nin Washington Büyükelçiliği ile Washington Türk-Amerikan Derneğinin (ATA-DC) sponsorluğunda Washington DC
Bağımsız Film Festivali kapsamında pazar günü ilk kez gösterilen filmin yapımcısı Ümran Safter, düzenlenen ödül
töreninden sonra AA muhabirine konuştu.
Safter, "Festivalde aslında çok iyi filmler yarışıyordu. En iyinin iyisi bizim için biraz sürpriz oldu. Çok sevindim"

Dünya çapında tanınan ve bugüne kadar 1 milyondan fazla fotoğraf çeken Ara Güler'in 60 yılı aşan kariyerine ışık tutan
filmi başka festivallerde de göstermek istediklerini belirten Safter, kasım ayında filmi tamamladıktan sonra birçok
festivale başvurduklarını ve ilk olarak Washington DC Bağımsız Film Festivali tarafından kabul edildiklerini söyledi.
Filmin dünya prömiyerini hep Washington ya da Los Angeles’ta yapmak istediğini belirten Safter, bu dileği gerçekleştiği
için mutlu olduğunu ifade etti. Safter, filmin mayıs başında Los Angeles’ta düzenlenecek Güneydoğu Avrupa Film
Festivali’nde, ayrıca 17-18 Mart'ta Selanik Belgesel Film Festivali’nde de gösterileceğini aktardı.
Safter, "Ara Güler’i bütün dünyaya tanıtmak istiyoruz. Hem kişiliğini hem fotoğraflarını hem de aslında İstanbul’u
tanıtmayı amaçlıyoruz. Filmimiz sadece Ara Güler ile ilgili değil, esasen İstanbul ve Türkiye'nin tarihi ile de ilgili"
dedi.
Bütün dinlerin ve ırkların nasıl barış içinde yaşadığını anlatan bir film yapmak istediklerini söyleyen Safter, "Ara
Güler de bunun için çok güzel bir örnek" diye konuştu.
Safter, yakında Türkiye'de de filmin galasını yapmayı planladıklarını, ayrıca özel gösterimler düzenlemek istediklerini
dile getirdi.
Washington DC Bağımsız Film Festivali'nin son günündeki ödül törenine filmin yapımcısı Ümran Safter'in yanı sıra proje
danışmanı Nezih Tavlaş ile senaryo yazarı Ahsen Diner de katıldı.

Ara Güler
SYNOPSIS
THE EYE OF ISTANBUL tells the story of Ara Guler, the legendary Armenian-Turkish photographer, through the culmination
of his retrospective exhibition in Istanbul. The documentary follows a non-linear narrative, which explores the artistic
process and impulses of this great master. Ara’s curiosity, resourcefulness and fearlessness are revealed through a
series of stories in the film.
At 87 years old, Ara is a complex and unforgettable character; he is still sharp, irreverent, funny and philosophical.
Although he is mostly recognized for his black and white photographs of Istanbul, he has enjoyed an international career,
which has spanned over sixty years and has generated more than 1 million photographs. A student and a follower of Henri-Cartier
Bresson, Ara’s mastery lies in capturing the stories and interactions among people at the right moment in history.
“The Eye of Istanbul” follows Ara Guler as he prepares for his retrospective exhibition where he assembles his
photographs and the stories behind his most iconic images spring to life. From the poor workers of Istanbul to the goat
herders of Anatolia, from the portraits of famous artists the likes of Picasso, to the Israeli/Palestinian conflicts,
Ara has captured the essence of the second half of the 20th century. Ara thinks of himself not as a photographer but as
a historian who has captured the lives of people and major historical events since the 1950s. However, Ara’s archives
have never been opened up to scholars but instead are crammed in boxes in his private office.
Ara’s beloved Istanbul is a secondary character in the documentary since his photographs have captured the soul of the
city for over 60 years. Ara is revered in his homeland, however, the question remains as to what will happen to his
archives, which are deemed to be a national heritage and a global treasure. In “The Eye of Istanbul” Ara Guler’s
riveting life and art is revealed through his photographs, cinema verite moments, films and interviews.
