zo’n man.
aangekeken.

This amazingly up-close documentary brings us into the lives of an Ethiopian
couple, Yezina and Mesagnow. Yezina suffers from a fistula which causes her
urine to constantly leak. She is shunned by the villagers because she smells.
Two million African women share her fate because tradition forces young girls
into early marriages when their bodies are too immature to bear children safely.
Often the babies die and the mothers are left with a hole in their pelvis.
Yezina was previously married at 13 and had a stillborn birth after 15 days of
labor. Her family had her fistula repaired in the Fistula Hospital at Addis
Ababa She remarried but an unsuccessful pregnancy reopened the fistula. Meganow
is a remarkable husband for not abandoning his sick wife. He puts up with her
leakage but he will not tolerate being childless. He is willing to sell his
plowing ox to pay for the expense of another surgery at the Hospital and a
subsequent Caesarean.
The film shows the remarkable work of the hospital in giving women a second
chance at normal lives. Yezina’s story has a happy ending-- a beautiful new baby
and a celebratory reunion with her neighbors and family.

Two million women worldwide suffer from fistula. In Ethiopia alone, some 100,000
girls and women suffer from obstetric fistula and there are 9,000 new cases each
year.
An obstetric fistula is an opening between the bladder and/or rectum and the
vagina, which Can occur during childbirth. The contractions, which often last
for days, constantly press the baby’s head against its mother’s pelvis, causing
damage to tissues of the rectum or bladder. Through the hole that results, the
woman continuously leaks urine or faeces.
Age-old traditions force girls to marry at a very young age. They become
pregnant so young that they cannot properly bear their baby because their pelvis
isn’t yet fully grown. The baby dies and the young mother is left with a fistula.
These girls and women are often banished from their families and communities
because they leak. And because of their unpleasant odour, fistula victims are
avoided in regular hospitals, sometimes even refused access altogether. Since
1974, operations have taken place at the Fistula Hospital in Addis Abeba. The
hospital was founded by an Australian couple, Catherine Hamlin and her husband.
This documentary is about a couple who has become the victim of age-old
traditions. It is the story of Yezina and Mesganow. They live in a small village,
many miles from the nearest town and civilisation.
