Orta halli bir evde sıradan bir kadın, sabah gözünü açar. Mutsuzdur. Her zaman
koşullandırıldığı şekilde kahvaltı hazırlamak, yemek ve temizlik yapmak gibi
işlerle boğuşmaya başlar. Yaşadığı evde sadece erkeklerin fotoğrafları olduğunu
farkeder. (Kayınpederi, kocası, kayınbiraderi vs.) Her gün temizlediği evde
kendine ait hiçbir şey yoktur. Kahvaltıdan sonra kocası evden gidince salondaki
fotoğraflara bakar. Mutsuzluğu giderek artmıştır. Kanepede oturan kocasının
fotoğrafını görünce kanepeyi temizlemeye başlar. Salon kapısına dayanmış
kayınbiraderinin fotoğrafını görünce kapıyı temizler. Derken hınçla her yeri
temizlemeye çalışır. Temizlik onun silahı ve erkek egemen topluma karşı tek
sığındığı eylemdir. Her yeri temizledikten sonra kirlenmemesi için adım atamaz
ve hareketsiz kalır. Taşlaşmıştır. Akşam kocası geldiğinde hala taş kesilmiş
durmaktadır. Kocası durumu anlayınca şaşırır ama yemek hazırlamadığı için ona
kızar. Sonra da kadına hiç yokmuş gibi davranır. Onu salonda taş gibi bırakıp
yatakodasına gider ve uyur. Sabah olunca kocası kahvaltı hazırlamasını ister.
Bunu duyunca kadın çözülür ve terlikleriyle evden çıkıp gider.
An ordinary woman in a middle-class house wakes up in the morning. She is
unhappy. She begins to struggle with chores such as preparing breakfast, cooking
and cleaning as she has always been conditioned. She notices that the only
photos around, in the house are the photos of the men living there (eg. Her
father-in-law, husband, brother-in-law, etc...). She has nothing of her own in
the house that she cleans every day. When her husband leaves the house after his
breakfast, she looks at the photos in the living room. Her unhappiness increases.
She starts to clean the sofa when she sees her husband’s photo sitting on the
sofa. Afterwards, she sees the photo of her brother-in-law leaning on the living
room’s door, and cleans the door. Then she rancorously continues with cleaning
everything around. Cleaning is her weapon and her only action against the male-dominated
society. After cleaning everywhere around, she even cannot take a step in order
not to pollute anything and stucks standing at the middle of the room. She is
petrified. When her husband comes home in the evening, she is still standing
frozen. Her husband suprises realizing the situation; however, gets angry at her
for not preparing the dinner. Then he starts treating her as if she doesn’t
exist. He leaves her frozen in the living room, goes to bedroom and sleeps. In
the morning, he asks her to prepare the breakfast. Hearing this, the woman thaws
and leaves the house in her slippers.
