Derin is a young woman who was abandoned by her father when shewas a child and
has been living with her mother for many years. Hisfather traveled around the
World and built a new life for himself, afterleaving his family. Years later,
due to his illness he has to return backand wants to see his daughter before he
takes his last breath. Eventhough Derin has been trying to escape for years, she
is forced toconfront her father, who is near his death at a hospital room.
Adapted from the short story of the same name in Ercan Başer’s book Hayat Gibi,
published by İthaki Publishing, Spinoza Baba is a film centered around the
universal concepts of “joy of life” and “existence,” inspired by Spinoza’s
philosophy.
The father character made a life-altering decision in his youth—choosing between
“truly living” and “turning his back on life.” He left his wife and daughter
behind to travel the world. In Spinoza Baba, this struggle is not exclusive to
parents; it is a dilemma every person faces. Should we chase our dreams, or
should we hold on to the stability of our current lives? Many dream of opening a
small café by the seaside, yet few dare to leave behind their comfort zones.
More often than not, earning a steady income and maintaining security seem
easier than stepping into the unknown.
This film does not seek to judge what is right or wrong; instead, it aims to
remind us that we all wrestle with similar contradictions. After all, we are all
human, and these dilemmas are a part of us. The message I want to share with the
audience is simple: “You are not alone.”
