Oktay is a carpenter's apprentice working in an instrument workshop. He lives in
the workshop where he works. He is madly in love with one of his clients, Sibel,
but he cannot tell her his love. Oktay's shyness is the subject of ridicule
among his colleagues. One day, Oktay witnesses a rape while leaving the tavern,
but does nothing to prevent it. When he returns to the workshop, he experiences
a sexual enthusiasm and masturbates under the influence of the event. Oktay,
whom we see as a naive and pure lover, became a prisoner of his sexual impulses
when faced with evil. Oktay continues to watch Sibel. Oktay finally manages to
open up to Sibel. Is Oktay a romantic lover or a potential rapist?
Director Statement
Perception depends on three things; the looking eye, the object being looked at,
and the light that illuminates the environment. So, does the fact that something
is in the dark mean it's not there? This movie was born from that thought. I
tried to examine a person in the dark beyond good and evil. The idea that the
character I drew as a pure lover had the potential to be a rapist was my
starting point. I explained the passivity of the character through the act of “looking”.
The fact that when he faced with love or evil, he was content with watching was
the indications of this.
I preferred the use of a moving camera in order to emphasize the passivity of
the character in the face of events and to follow him. As he looked at the
events unfolding around him, we looked at him.
I wanted this movie to be a dark movie. The movie was shot on the streets of
Galata. The streets, which are bright and crowded during the day turn into
desolation at night and this show two different faces of the city. In this
respect, it coincided with the mood of the character.
