In this movie I wanted to take the delusions, which people consider as social
lives, in the hand. Throughout the movie, we see the character we call ‘PERSON’
trying to escape from his loneliness by watching what other people do in virtual
environment. Modem getting broken is enough for us to see the reality; when the
modem is broken we can see: actually there is nobody around. But the ‘PERSON’
returns to his old life when the modem starts to work again. The reason why I
didn’t name the ‘PERSON’ is, he symbolizes a community rather than an individual.
I believe the namelessness is helpful for viewers to see themselves in the
character. Throughout the movie the sound of the unknown whispers turns into
shouting. I wanted this situation to give the feeling of awakening. I thought
the viewers should wait for this awakening but it shouldn’t happen, since all
these shouting don’t wake anybody up in real life. All of the dialogues and
sounds are taken from books and theatre play texts. The reason for that is; I
wanted to give references which I consider could be the cure, instead of
pointing out one particular problem.
The movie explores the theme of social isolation in the digital age. The
character we know as 'PERSON' tries to escape his loneliness by immersing
himself in the virtual world. The movie shows how technology can create a
delusion of social life, leading people to believe they are connected even
though they are physically alone. The absence of physical presence is emphasized
when the modem breaks down and we see that there is actually no one around. The
namelessness of the character represents a community instead of an individual,
making it easier for viewers to relate to the character's predicament. The use
of sound, from the unknown whispers to the shouting, creates a feeling of
awakening that never fully materializes. The movie does not offer a specific
solution to the problem of social isolation but instead provides references that
could be potential cures. Overall, the movie presents a thought-provoking
commentary on the effects of technology on social relationships and the
importance of human connection.
