Doctor Efkan is a young idealist pediatrist in Gerede; a tiny town in Anatolia,
State Hospital. In a winter day of 1993; he diagnoses Nisa, 9 days old baby,
with severe phenomonia. The baby’s father is away for military service; Efkan
explains the situation to grandfather Bünyamin and aunt. He tells them that the
baby should be immeditaly taken in new-born intensive care to Ankara (capital of
Turkey) by ambulance; if not she would die.
Unfortunately, the family gets around the doctor and takes her home.
The doctor, recognizing the situation; find the baby’s home. He fetches her from
home as she turned blue, on the edge of death. Despite the insistence of the
doctor; the family refuses to take her Ankara with “she is a girl” , “ she will
not survive” and “ economic incapability” claims and want to take her back home.
Efkan, knowing that it would mean leaving her to death, has no choice and
hospitalizes her in Gerede State Hospital.
Under primitive conditions, in an hospital with insufficient facilities; the
survival challenge Nisa begins. Meanwhile; Dr. Efkan passes through difficult
days, neglects his wife and his own baby; stays at the hospital with Nisa. Baby
The doctor and the nurses strive extremely and baby survives. All the town
speaks about this case. The case, lived in a time when Dr.Efkan prepares to move
from Gerede deteriorates his relation with his wife and at the end he decides to
stay in Gerede.
