Kübra, yeni doğan bebeğiyle birlikte babaannesi Emine’nin köy evinde
kalmaktadır. Bebekleri öldürdüğü rivayet edilen Alkarısı adlı bir yaratığın
yaşadığı köye musallat olduğunu öğrenince kendini karanlık bir halk masalının
ortasında bulur.
Kübra stays in the country house of her grandmother Emine with her illegitimate
newborn baby. She hears of a creature named Alkarısı, which is rumored to kill
newborn babies, haunts her village and finds herself in the middle of a dark
folk tale.
Alkarısı is one of the oldest Anatolian myths. I became acquainted with the myth
through the stories I heard from my grandmother when I was a child. And ever
since I wanted to tell an authentic story about it. Alkarısı is rumored to be an
anthropomorphic female creature who haunts puerperant women and kills their new
born babies… She is mostly portrayed as an old, deceitful, malignant woman who
both wears red clothes and is afraid of the color red. The totems applied to
protect people from her (tying a red ribbon on the head of the puerperant,
making the post-partum women drink red sherbet, putting men's clothes around the
babies) still exist as a birth tradition in Turkey today.
In the film, I aimed to deal with the myth, which I believe provides a rich
background in terms of the role and interpretation of women in society, not only
as an element of fear, but together with the socio-cultural effects at the
starting point. I also inspired by universel folks tales whose effects on
patriarchal world are the subject of many academic studies today and wanted to
design the visual and auditory language of the film in parallel with this
sources. To highlight the nature and human voices were an other storytelling way
for me to symbolize the patriarchal pressure and the deadlock that the
characters are exposed to. I hope that my short film Alkarısı can make it
visible what kind of consequences patriarchal norms can cause in times of crisis,
and how they can drag disadvantaged societies into tragic conditions that amount
to self-sabotage.
