İbrahim Karatay

Ibrahim (Ibo) was born in 1979 in Istanbul, Turkey. When he was 15 years old his parents have suddenly decided to establish the family in The Netherlands. By then The Netherlands became abruptly his hometown.

After the second year of his study Public Administration at The Hague University, he went in 2004 to the UK to learn English. During those years he got more and more interested in photography and cinema.

After finishing Public Administration, Ibo has worked as a consultant and project manager for several years. Ibo's love for cinema turned out to be stronger than expected. So he switched career and received directing and screenwriting training from Dutch and Turkish directors and screenwriters.

He by then started the pre-master Film and Television Studies, at The Utrecht University focusing mainly on film narratology and dramaturgy. During his study he also started working on film sets to gain experience. He is a member of Rinkel Film in Amsterdam since February 2015 and involved, as a Development Executive and Producer, in the development of on-going and new projects.

He is also the co-owner of Alchemic Film. It is a Dutch film company, founded by Paul Oscar Kanter and Ibo, with the goal of producing artistically independent films for international audience. They develop and produce short films and features.

Alchemic Film's first production, the short film Lejla (2017), directed by Stijn Bouma a student at Béla Tarr's film.factory, was selected for the Cannes Cinéfondation 2017. Their next film, Regained Memory (2018) (also by Bouma) was shot in Bosnia and Herzegovina in early 2017 and was selected for Karlovy Vary. Ibrahim Karatay's directorial debut, the short film Shadow of Violence (2020), is their next project. Shadow of Violence is the first part of a trilogy. The second part Shadow of Injustice is inspired on a true event in Turkey and the third part Shadow of Ignorance is based on a piece of Dostoevsky. The last part of the trilogy will be a proof of concept for his feature film.
