The documentary, which took 10 years to shoot, is an experimental compilation
consisting of the original works of many local and foreign contemporary dance
and performance artists whose paths crossed in Istanbul and the expressionist
aesthetic dynamism of the city. Each piece of music, dance, performance and
movement in the film is unique, like each individual who finds himself in the
crowded and chaotic structure of Istanbul. S/he gives meaning to the importance
of the process rather than the result in the work of finding, creating and
sustaining her/himself, with the abstract expressionist movement of art. Just
like being an individual in a crowd, there is also a 'taking place' and 'nesting'
in complexity. Therefore, the point where everyone who has found themselves in
the city of Istanbul undoubtedly unites and where the performances in the
documentary were inspired by; Istanbul - You call it 'chaos', we call it 'home'.
is.
Movement Museum - Dansistanbul is the culmination of a ten–year journey—an
experiment in capturing the pulse of a city through the language of bodies,
gestures, and sounds. Istanbul, with its density, its contradictions, and its
ceaseless rhythm, became not only the backdrop but the living collaborator of
this film.
From the beginning, I resisted the temptation of narrating Istanbul through a
single perspective. Instead, I invited contemporary dance and performance
artists—local and international—whose paths crossed in this city, to inscribe
their own movements into its fabric. Each performance, like each individual
wandering through the streets, is distinct yet part of the greater whole.
Together, they form a living archive, a museum in motion.
The film does not seek conclusions. Its structure is deliberately non-linear,
its meaning born from process rather than outcome. It is in the act of searching,
of creating, of sustaining oneself amidst chaos that the essence of this work
resides. The camera does not impose; it listens, it waits, it allows the bodies
to claim space, to find shelter, to nest within the unpredictable textures of
the metropolis.
In Istanbul, what often appears as disorder, we embrace as vitality. What others
may call chaos, we recognize as the condition of belonging. The film, therefore,
is not only about dance—it is about survival, resilience, and the poetic
insistence of existence within complexity.
For me, Movement Museum - Dansistanbul is both a love letter and a mirror - a
love letter to the artists who surrendered themselves to the city’s currents,
and a mirror reflecting the lived truth of Istanbul itself. To be an individual
in this city is to constantly negotiate between dissolution and recognition. To
dance here is to declare - “You call it chaos, we call it home.
