Meaning of a City: London, was brought to life after a process spanning years,
in which I included my inner conversations about the concepts of city and home,
based on my experiences in London.
Meaning of a City: London is a personal and experimental journey into the layers
of a city that both broke and rebuilt me. At 21, I found myself homeless in
London—alone, anonymous, and adrift. But over time, what was once a place of
dislocation became a complex mirror, reflecting back fragments of identity,
memory, and meaning.
This film is not a conventional narrative. It’s a collage of impressions—sounds,
shadows, silence—an attempt to understand how a city inhabits us just as we
inhabit it. London is never one thing; it is history and illusion, loneliness
and connection, decay and beauty. I wanted to explore that multiplicity through
a visual language that bends time and reality, and through a structure that
follows the rhythm of memory rather than chronology.
In an era when cities are increasingly viewed through data and development, I
wanted to reclaim the subjective, the poetic, the vulnerable. Meaning of a City
is about that shift—from surviving in a place to understanding it as an
extension of one’s own inner world. It’s a meditation on place, displacement,
and the quiet wisdom that emerges when we stop trying to conquer a city and
instead begin to listen to it. Abdullah Harun İlhan is a film director and
photographer from Türkiye. He began making films at age eleven and has since
screened award-winning shorts and documentaries at over 200 festivals worldwide.

seventeen. He earned master’s degrees from Ibn Haldun University and the

philosophy, memory, and human resilience.
