sorgular.
Majzoob Ramazan tells the story of Ramazan, a disabled Syrian refugee, and his
life in Konya Bedesten Market, as well as the conflicting attitudes of the
shopkeepers who take him in. Ramazan is a child who, due to health issues, is
constantly hungry and eats incessantly. The market merchants sometimes take care
of him, buy him food, and show him kindness; at other times, they use him in
social media videos to gain views. Some are simply annoyed by his presence.
Ramazan does no harm; he has a loyal and pure soul. His family, however, turns
his situation into a commercial opportunity. The documentary questions the
complex relationships society builds between aid, spectacle, and self-interest
through the fragile existence of a young man.
While filming Majzoob Ramazan, I wasn’t just trying to portray a person—I was
trying to reflect the eyes that watch him. Ramadan is an intellectually disabled
Syrian refugee living in Konya’s Bedesten Bazaar. Some shopkeepers embrace him
like family, while others ignore or even exploit him. His silence speaks louder
than words, revealing contradictions in how society defines care, charity, and
visibility.
This film is not about giving answers. It is about asking an uncomfortable
question: Am I telling Ramazan’s story, or am I using his presence to say
something about myself, or about us?
I tried not only to observe Ramazan but also to question the role of the camera,
the storyteller, and the viewer. Majzoob Ramazan became less a portrait of a boy
and more a mirror held up to those around him—including myself.
