Teng, a 40-year-old Filipino fisherman who has been fishing for about 32 years,
occasionally gets bored with his monotonous life. He has never left his town,
and for 32 years, he has woken up at the same time and gone to the same river to
try to catch fish. Some days, he catches a lot of fish, while on others, he
catches none. Amidst all this sameness, what keeps Teng tightly bound to life is
a story his father told him. When he goes home in the evening and can embrace
his children, every day becomes the best day of his life. And it's precisely at
this point that his father's story begins. There was a man who defied all the
mundane arguments and went home in the evening to hug his children, and that
became the best day of his life.

Sıradanlık olgusu modern insanın reddetmeye çalıştığı fakat hiçbir zaman
kaçamadığı bir gerçekliktir. Bireyler bu sıradanlığı kırma adına farklı
uğraşlarla hemhal olmaya çalışırlar. Fakat modern insan hiçbir zaman tatmin
olmamaktadır. Çok büyük bir heyecanla başlanılan bir kitap yarıda bırakılır,
çıktığımız yolculuklarda başımıza gelen görece iyi veya kötü olayları tahayyül
etmek yerine başımıza gelen felaketler olarak okuruz. Hep daha fazlasını isteyen
ve hiçbir şeyle tatmin olmayan insan için sıradan nedir?
Filmimin kahramanı Teng ile karşılaştığım zaman modern bir insan olarak
hayatının çok sıradan olduğunu düşündüm. Çünkü bana öğretilen öğretide Teng’e
yer yoktu. Her gün aynı saatte kalkıyor her zaman gittiği nehirde balıklarını
avlıyor veya avlayamıyor. Ardından evine dönüyor. Peki 32 yılının aslında sadece
bir gün gibi geçmesi onu rahatsız etmiyor muydu? Bu noktada aynı kaderi
paylaştığı babasının anlattığı bir hikâye var; bu hikâyeye göre insanın
hayatının en güzel günü akşam eve gittiğinde ailesine veya sevdiklerine
sarılmasıdır. İşte bu tüm sıradanlığı yıkacak ve dünyadaki herkes hayatının en
güzel gününü yaşamış olacaktı. Hayattan pek de fazla bir alacağı olmayan
bulunduğu kasabadan daha önce hiç dışarı çıkmamış Filipinli bir balıkçı bizim
tüm tatminsizliğimizi elinin tersiyle itiyor ve bir derviş misali bizlere bir
şeyler söylemeye çalışıyordu. Belki bugün balık tutamadım belki yarın da
tutamayacağım ama başladığım kitabı bitirecek yolda başıma gelen her şeyi
tahayyül edeceğim. Evet ben tatminsizliği reddedip akşam eve döndüğümde
hayatımın hiç de sıradan olmadığını ve benim de yaşadığımın hayat olduğunu
insanlara göstereceğim.
Film bu noktada bizlere çok sıradan gözüken bir hikâyenin aslında arka planında
çok büyük bir gerçekliğin yattığını gösteriyor. Film insanın elinin tersi ile
ittiği birçok güzelliğin aslında evden, aileden başladığını ve bu güzelliklerin
bütün sıradanlığı bitirdiği hakikatini yüzümüze vuruyor. Çırpınan bir balık gibi
çabalayan ve asla pes etmeyen bir balıkçı her gün hayatının en güzel gününü
yaşıyor.
The concept of ordinariness is a reality that modern humans try to reject, but
they can never escape from it. Individuals strive to break this monotony through
various pursuits, yet modern humans are never satisfied. They start a book with
great excitement but leave it unfinished, and when they go on journeys, they
imagine the events that happen as disasters rather than as relatively good or
bad experiences. Always wanting more and never being content with anything, what
does ordinary mean for such individuals?
When I encountered Teng, the protagonist of my film, as a modern individual, I
thought his life was very ordinary. Because the teachings I received had no
place for Teng. He wakes up at the same time every day, goes to the same river
to catch or attempt to catch fish, and then returns home. But did it not bother
him that his 32 years passed like just one day? At this point, there is a story
shared with his father, sharing the idea that the most beautiful day of a
person's life is when they go home in the evening and embrace their family or
loved ones. This would break all the monotony, and everyone in the world would
experience the most beautiful day of their life. A Filipino fisherman who has
little to gain from life and has never left his town is rejecting all our
dissatisfaction and, like a dervish, trying to convey something to us. Maybe
today I couldn't catch any fish, and maybe I won't be able to catch any tomorrow,
but I will imagine everything that happens on the journey to finishing the book.
Yes, I will reject dissatisfaction and show people that when I return home in
the evening, my life is far from ordinary, and it is indeed worth living.
At this point, the film shows us that behind a seemingly ordinary story lies a
great truth. It reveals that many beauties we push away with our own hands
actually begin from home, from family, and these beauties are what put an end to
all the monotony. Like a struggling fish, an unyielding fisherman experiences
the most beautiful day of his life every day.
