Zülheya is a girl born blind living in Afghanistan. Zülheya cannot see but
perceives the world. Living through her senses, Zülheya sees and feels by
touching and calling to her birds. Her bond with her birds connects her to life.
However, one day, due to financial needs, her birds are sold.
Seeing is the subject of modernism. Touch and sounds are more ancient. Thinking
you’ve seen something or thinking you’ve seen everything. We believe that we see
everything very well because all things are presented to us for our observation.
We see both the bad and the good. We see what is and what is not—or at least we
think we do. When I met Zülheya, I learned that she had been blind from birth.
But her dialogue with her birds was completely different from mine as a sighted
person, or someone who claims to be sighted. Because I had never formed such a
connection with anyone before. While I thought I had seen everything, I realized
I had only seen what was visible.
A father struggling with financial difficulties needed to bring food home. But
what does it mean to sacrifice the most valuable of all? Does that make Zülheya
a tragic hero?
We tried to re-experience the act of seeing, setting aside all that we’ve seen.
In the film, we touched on these elements to show that seeing is an entirely
different state—one that is based on feelings, sounds, and touches.
