The Third Istanbul Slide Days

Istanbul - Turkish Daily News

The "Third Istanbul Slide Days" will take place in Istanbul between October 17-25 at a number of cultural and business centers in Beyoglu.

"Slide Days" seeks to bring together teachers and students, amateurs and professionals in the field of photography in order to create an open forum for everyone interested in photography. The organizers believe that a slide show forms a highly effective way of expression. However, while a number of photographers prepare slide shows which are attended by packed audiences, Turkish photographers and viewers have not fully discovered one another yet.

The Istanbul Slide Days offer a platform for photographers to share their work, without creating an overly competitive atmosphere. This year, approximately 100 photographers will participate in the activity with 80 separate shows. Seeking to create a qualitative development in the photographers' art, the Slide Days include the following six categories: Stories, Press Photographs, Photography and the Other Arts, First Presentations, Short Presentations and Independent Presentations.

The opening of the Istanbul Slide Days took place with a cocktail party at the Italian Culture Center on the evening of October 15. The photographers receive a small royalty and the viewers have to pay a symbolic amount to attend the presentations. Fethi Izan made the opening of the Slide Days representing the organizing committee and presented his slide show "Constipated." Gultekin Cizgen, who completed his 40th year as photographer this year, joined the evening with a presentation called "Clik." Cizgen's presentation brings together the photographer and the object of photography on the same plane.

Each slide will be shown at two different times in two separate locations that have been designed for the slide shows. The following sponsors opened their performance halls for the slide presentations: Akademi Istanbul, Fotografevi-Fujifilm, IFSAK, Italian Culture Center, Turkcell and TURSAK.

One of the special events during the Slide Days is entitled "Respect." This section pays homage to
Mehmet Avcidirlar and Ozgen Ozgenal, two masters of photography who died recently.

Another special presentation is "The Guest Country." With the contributions of the Dutch General Council, Wilco van Herpen, Martin Woolboer and Duco de Vries presented their work on Saturday, October 17 at the Italian Culture Center. Herpen's "Bike in Hand" can be seen at 3:00 p.m., Waalboer's "Living Rooms" can be seen at 4:00 p.m. and de Vries' "Charisma in Craziness" can be seen at 5:00 p.m. The same presentations will be shown at IFSAK on October 18 at 2:00, 2:45 and 3:00 p.m.

The slide show includes a "Hasankeyf Special Section." This part is dedicated to saving Hasankeyf, which has important historical, cultural and natural treasures. Unfortunately, a dam being planned for the region is going to inundate the area. The organizers of the slide show would like to contribute to the efforts to save the region.

The "Slide Show Scholarship" is given to university students to encourage them in their work. The scholarship was given to Mimar Sinan University students Engin Kaban and Servet Dilber for their Hasankeyf project. Kaban and Dilber will present "The Last Lights in Hasankeyf," sponsored by Utopia Photographs Production Services Lt., on Saturday, October 17 at 2:00 p.m. as part of the Hasankeyf Special Program. Another activity within the Hasankeyf program is the presentation called "Spare Us, River Tigris" by the Hasankeyf volunteers.

Then there is a conference by Gultekin Cizgen called "Mathematical Visualization." At the conference on Saturday, October 17 at 7:00 p.m. at the Italian Culture Center, Cizgen will recount his artistic journey from painting to photography, and from electronic visualization to digital presentation.

During the nine-day-long slide presentation, six shows that were widely popular during the Second Slide Days show will be repeated. The shows to be repeated are Resul Bastug's "Silent Boat," M. Emin Altan's "An Experimental Work: Cuba," Emre Ermin's "The Story of a Sunflower, the Clouds and the Street," Bulent Akbas's "Dancing With Colors," Suna Aktas and Yasemin Bay's "Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday Mothers, Sunday..." and Fethi Sabunsoy's "Impression."

The main sponsors of the 3rd Istanbul Slide Days are Park Maritime ve Hopa Port Administration Lt., Hey Foods and Green Island Teas.
