Uluslararası "1001 Belgesel Film Festivali” ve, “Belgesel Sinemacılar
Konferansı” sekizinci yılında, 2-6 Mart 2005 tarihlerinde İstanbul`da
gerçekleşiyor.
Festival ve Konferans, yedi yıldır, Türkiye`den ve Dünyadan yüzlerce
belgesele, belgeselciye ve belgesel kuramcısına ev sahipliği yaptı.
Dünya Belgeselcilerinin her yıl filmleri ve bildirileri ile katıldığı
etkinliklerimiz, sinemanın dünya sanatı olarak gelişmesinin; toplumların
birbirlerini tanımaları ve anlamalarının ve belgesel sinemayı hak ettiği
düzeye taşımanın platformu olarak bir buluşma noktası.
Festival programına kabul edilen filmler, Türkiye Belgesel Sinemacılar
Birliği arşivine alınıyor ve İstanbul`un ardından “Uluslararası Ankara Film
Festivali” başta olmak üzere Türkiye`nin çeşitli kentlerinde, Belgesel
Günleri kapsamında ücretsiz olarak gösteriliyor.
8. Uluslararası “1001 Belgesel Film Festivali” gösterileri sırasında,
yönetmenler, salonda bulunacak ve gösterimin ardından izleyici ve
belgeselciler ile filmleri üzerine söyleşecek. Konferansta bildiri
sunumlarından sonra da yönetmenler ve izleyici ile gerçekleşecek olan toplu
konuşma ile etkinlik sona erecek.
Belgesel Sinemacılar Uluslararası 8. Konferansı`nın bildiri konusu, BSB
Genel Konseyi tarafından ‘Oryantalizm ve Belgesel Sinema` olarak
kararlaştırıldı.

The young telephone operator of a company commissioned to build a hydro-electric
dam in the mountains was a movie fan. Thus he was asked to make a film on
this prestigious project which was using new techniques in construction and

The remains of old industries can still be found in the countryside around
the big French towns. These witnesses of the past are full of poetry today.
When they are compared with present industrial landscapes, these bucolic
places make us think about beauty and ugliness. "We can't dismiss modernism
as ugly" the narrator tells us, "We must learn how to look at it". The
filmmaker compares views of the Saint-Denis industrial area or harbour
scenes with painting. And he pertinently points out that in the past iron
architecture and its "opulent elegance" shocked people whereas today we find
it charming. He concludes: "the reason to be happy outnumber our regrets".

One fine summer day, twelve years after the end of the war and the discovery
of the Nazi concentration camps, Alain Resnais leads us into the deserted
Auschwitz camp. "We can only show you the shell and the atmosphere of all
that hardship.." says Michel Bouquet in the lead-in. The commentary, with
its restrained power, was written by Jean Cayrol, a former concentration
camp prisinor.

The film deals with a state of affairs that has been going on ever since the
first European contact with African culture. The craze for Negro statues
resulted in the export to Europe of a great number of works. But taken out
of their original context, these statues lose their meaning. The film aims
make us understand that in the West we only give importance to the form, the
outer appearance. "When men die, they become History. When statues die, they
become Art. This botany of death is what we refer to as culture", the
narrator tells us.

The film, which is both an analysis and a philosophical report, aims to tell
the story of the left between 1967 and 1977. The first part, Les mains
fragiles, tells of the influence of the Vietnam War had on international
movements. In France , it brought about the May 1968 explosion. The second
part of the film, Les Mains coupées, starts with the Prague spring.it shows
the disillusion of militants confronted with the Soviet invasion. The
members of political parties are concerned by the need renovate.
Throughout the world, militancy is changing shape. The defence of women's
rights, the protection of the environment and the struggle against the arms
race now move to the fore. … The strength of this compilation comes from its
relationship with the various commentaries. By dialectically opposing it to
reality, Chris Marker calls the documentary's supposed objectivity into
question.

In 1967, seven filmmakers and an impressive number of technicians put their
talents together to protest about the Vietnam War and stir up public opinion.
The film made up of eleven sections.
The introduction describes the forces in the conflict: on the one hand, the
sophisticated technology of American aircraft carriers and on the other, and
the individual hand-built shelters in Hanoi. During an air raid, the screen
goes dark, leaving only the soundtrack. A silent newsreel shows us the
extent of the damage immediately after. …Fidel Castro reminds us of the
importance of guerilla forces in the Vietnam conflict. Ann Uyen, a young
Vietnamese girl living in Paris, talks of Norman Morrison, who burnt himself
alive outside the Pentagon. On the other side of the Atlantic, his wife
talks of her feelings. Vertigo deals with the giant demonstration of April
15, 1967, when 500 000 people marched for peace in Vietnam.

Dutch filmmaker Honigman explores the horrors of violent conflict through an
unusual portal: music. UN soldiers tell of their experiences in various
conflicts (Korea, Cambodia, Lebanon and Bosnia). The soldiers, asked what
song they associate with their peace-missions, recount how that music helped
overcome difficult situations. Their experiences unfold through interviews,
photographs and videos taken by the soldiers themselves. The horrors of war,
and the fragility of that experience, are exposed.

On April 23, 2003 the border separating the Greek and the Turkish
communities in Cyprus was opened to passage after 30 years. Thousands of
people started rushing to the border every day to visit their villages they
had left behind years ago." Which Cyprus" tells the stories of these people
travelling to" the other side" of their divided country, old friends finding
each other again, their joy and sadness...Hot issues including the
possibility of living together again, the nationalist influences in both
communities, the missing persons, how to heal the wounds of the war, crimes
of the past etc. are treated. Presenting a complete and objective picture of
the Cyprus problem and dealing with most of the issues existing in a divided
society, "Which Cyprus" might be a light of hope for other troubled regions
of the world.

In November 2003, trade ministers from 34 countries met in Miami, Florida,
to negotiate the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). The FTAA threatens
to devastate workers, the environment, and public services like health care,
education, and water, and to destroy indigenous rights and cultural
diversity across North, Central, and South America.
Thousands of union members, environmentalists, feminists, anarchists,
students, farm workers, media activists, and human rights activists who
gathered in Miami to struggle against the FTAA were brutally attacked with
rubber bullets, pepper spray, electric guns and shock batons, embedded
reporters and information warfare, all coordinated by the new United States
Department of Homeland Security.
Against Capital's model of paramilitary oppression, information warfare, and
corporate rule, we offered models of grassroots resistance, creative action
and solidarity.

Set during the current Intifada, this documenatry follows four Palestinian
families living in Dheisheh Refugee Camp near Bethlehem. Fadi is thirteen
and cares for his younger brothers, the Hammash family pass on the lesson of
life with humor and passion, Sana is a sine woman who endures long commutes
to do community work, and Emad and Hanan are a young couple trying to shield
their daughter from the harsh realities of the occupation. They talk about
their past and discuss the future with humor, sorrow, frustration and hope.

Sex, Neddles and Roubles takes us on a journey to the cold winter nights of
St. Petersburg where we meet with some of its young drug addicted
prostitutes. Trough poignant real-life stories and interviews with leading
figures in the fight against AIDS, corrupt policemen-pimps and
discriminating doctors, this documentary seeks to understand how AIDS
reached such alarming proportions over the last decade. This is a crisis
which has catapulted Russia into being the country with the fastest
spreading epidemic of AIDS in the world today.

This deeply personal and moving film begins with the filmmaker learning he
has prostate cancer and only a few years to live. It ends with the hopeful
prospect of reprieve, thanks to an alternative therapy discovered in New
York. In the interim, experimenting with different Eastern and Western
approaches to his illness, van der Keuken and his wife Noshka do what they
have always done: travel and film. They return to locales from earlier works
while continuing to track the pulse of life-amongst children in a village in
Burkina Faso and slum dwellers in Rio de Janeiro-and in the process create
some of the most compelling images of a long career.

The film examines the Bolivarian Revolution of Venezuela as connected to the
world-wide movement against capitalist globalization. The film shows the
evolution of the popular movement in Venezuela from the 'Caracazo' riots of
1989 to the massive actions that brought revolutionary president Hugo Chávez
back to power, 48 hours after a U.S.-led military coup in 2002. The film
ends with an epilogue that show the next steps that the Venezuelan people
are taking, not only to fight against the oligarchy and imperialism, but to
exercise what is called in the popular movement: Revolution within the
Revolution.

You find the most breathtakingly beautiful scenery in Rosia Montana, Romania.
The houses are centuries old. The people of the village are deeply attached
to their land, their homes, their churches, their dead. The surrounding
mountains hide 300 tons of gold mine. They will use the move to new modern
houses not far from here. There will a tailing pond of 800 hectares
containing cyanide and heavy metals, with a 180 m high dam.
There will be gold. There will be silver. There will be a New Eldorado.
Only the breathtakingly beautiful village of Rosia Montana will disappear...

Ten years after the Dayton-peace Stari Most, the most important Osmanian
monument at the Balkans, is rebuilded - intending to be a bridge between the
hostiled citizens of East - and West-Mostar after the first Christian Muslim
war in modern Europe. The film watches the reconstruction trough the eyes of
men who were friends before war, living at and with the old bridge, and who
are now deathly enemies: former bridge diver and the general, who was their
friend before war and came back to siege and destroy the old Muslim town of
Mostar - and the old bridge.

The Bridge of Mostar that sank into the waters of the river Neretva as the
result of Croatian cannonfire during the Bosnian War has been reconstructed.
This documentary is about the feelings of the Bridge about its past and its
future; it shares its experiences, pains, joys, sorrows with the audience,
causing tears to come to viewers' eyes alternately through laughter and
anguish.

nations and cultures that did not know where Bosnia was, or what the
conflict was about. Among them was a force from Kenya, which included
several Samburu warriors. Bosnia Hotel films these warriors after their
return to their ancestral land. It shows their present life as cattle
herders on the African plain. They tell of their experience in the "white
man's war. "In many ways, their confusion about what was going on between
the Serbs, Bosnians and Croats was not very different from many in the
Western world who had full access to news reports. Why were neighbors
killing one another, and why were women and children being killed?

S. Sz. Had been preparing for months to flee. He drifted for four hours in
the ice-cold water of the River Szamos, his arrival in Hungary was something
straight out of an action movie. He was lucky not to drown, not to freeze
and not to be shot to death. In fact he was even joined by his family later.
A. H. and his wife had to lie to the court, claiming one of them committed
adultery so that they would be granted a divorce. For years they walked past
each other like strangers, and both entered into marriages of convenience so
that all doubt would be erased in the small town they lived in.
But is it possible to start a new life having left everything behind? Can
one find a home away from home?

This documentary is about a formerly populous village that today is
inhabited only by a few elderly people. This village near Pertek has been
deserted because of war, migration to Europe, and economic reasons. Most of
the villagers have migrated to Europe; some of them have migrated to the
metropolitan centers of Turkey. The film shows the lifestyles and longings
of the villagers in Europe, the metropolises, and of those that remain in
the village. It compares the old and new value systems and tells of the
alienation between the old and new generations.

In a boarding kindergarten in Wuhan in China, we spent 14 months in
video-taping the life of a first year grade class, a second year grade class
and a third year grade class during the period.
Life in a kindergarten is mobile. The growth of children is gradual and
slow. Matters appear everyday can be both trivial and significant because
anything happens in one's childhood will influence a person almost all his
or her life.
A unit, a period of time and a pile of fragments of life in a person's
growth must carry something. When we bend over to examine our children, we
have also examined ourselves and the whole world at the same time.

The documentary is about four seasons in Kenarbel village, located in the
Cildir district of Ardahan. Kenarbel is an Anatolian village near the
Georgian border near the Akyuz Lake. It depends on animal husbandry as an
economic resource. The village is also dependant on the Lake. Animals drink
water from the lake and fishing is also another source of revenue. The view
of the lake has taken its place within the general landscape of the village.
Extreme winter conditions prevail in the village and elders tell of how they
would have to dig tunnels through the snow in order to get home. Stories of
battle, fairytales told by grandmothers to their grandchildren and
performances of the bards are topics of the documentary.

The Syriacs, who were the first followers of Jesus, are generally thought in
simply religious terms. However the Syriacs possess a rich culture and they
are a very important part of Turkey's cultural mosaic that should not be
lost.
This documentary investigates the Syriac culture that faces the threat of
extinction in Southeastern Anatolia, the geography where this culture was
born. The Syriacs were the source of many innovations that affected Western
churches. Their belief system defines God as "light". Born in Antioch and
spreading to northern Mesopotamia, this historically and religiously
significant culture is losing its voice and its members in Southeastern
Anatolia.

Carpatia takes you on a poetic journey of time through the rural mountainous

What is the significance of the "Mannheimer School" of music? And how did
the Enlightenment Period affect contemporary music? 7 to 9-year-old kids can
answer such questions in Kushtepe, a "Merry Gypsy" suburb of Istanbul. Their
parents come from the Black Sea, Eastern Anatolia and Thrace. The children
take instrument lessons; learn music theory and solfege in Bilgi University,
which is situated in the middle of the neighborhood. Customers of the local
barber point out another bitter reality: the people of Kushtepe surely love
music more than all, but before any musical education comes, they have to
survive the struggle for daily life. Young girls whose mothers clean the
corridors of the university where they are being taught music, all want to
become musicians. Some prefer to be studio musicians, some want to compose
symphonies. However, their favorite music is "slow" music, ie. "Kushtepe
Blues".

The border that was drawn in the northeast of Anatolia in 1921 separated 18
villages in the Macahela valley. 12 villages are in present day Georgia,
while 6 of the villages remain on the Turkish side of the border. People in
this valley were relatives, their songs were common.
The people of the region, living in impassable mountains in a high and deep
place closed of to the outer world, preserved their culture for centuries.
The enchanting geographic beauty of the valley has preserved the last voices
of their cultural richness in this hidden paradise.
The elders of the region sing many songs at weddings, celebrations, in the
field, and during cooperation. These songs are traditional, passed on from
generation to generation for centuries; an oral heritage. These songs are
just vocals, sung only by human voices, with no need for other instruments.
These songs are sung together, with 2-3 separate but harmonious voices.
Ethnomusicologists date this polyphonic vocal music sung in Georgian to a
history of 1500 years.

Gooran, Gholkhani and Banzardeh tribes stay in Dalahou in the northern side
of Zargos Mountains in spring time. Spring is the busiest season for the
tribes of this region. Milkan portrays some aspects of tribal life in Spring
time, in which woman have most of the responsibilities. Obtaining fuel,
water and preparing various dairy products and building shelters are all
done by women. If there is any time left, they engage in various rituals. In
Dalahou, woman means life.

"Fear of the wind", that's the feeling of this young boy walking the streets
of the brand-new city, "clear, straight, trees-less, and filled-up with the
wind's strength". Le Havre, cleared-off by one off the most radical
destruction of World War II, has been rebuilt "modern and exemplary".
Conceived and built under the direction of the architect Auguste Perret,
downtown Le Havre has been passed to us as a masterpiece of 20th century
architecture.
The film is built as a note-book, walking through the city: Black and whites
pictures of the building site; facts and stories about the reconstruction
history; and the recollection of this young boy's emotions, who experienced
here his first perception of the world.

CITY OF PHOTOS explores the little known ethos of neighborhood photo studios
in Indian cities, discovering entire imaginary worlds in the smallest of
spaces. Tiny, shabby studios that appears stuck in a time warp turn out to
be places throbbing with energy.
As full of surprises as the people who frequent these studios are the
backdrops they enjoy posing against and the props they choose. These afford
fascinating glimpses into individual fantasies and popular tastes.
Yet beneath the fun and games runs an undercurrent of foreboding. Not
everyone enjoys being photographed; not every backdrop is beautiful; not all
photos are taken on happy occasions.
Desires, memories and stories, all so deeply linked to the photographic
experience, come together as part of a personal journey into the city of
photos.

"Flowers of Flour" is a documentary about the story of bread in Anatolia.
The importance of bread in the daily lives of people in this region from the
Hittites to the present. The use of bread as an economic and political
force. The values symbolized by bread in Christian and Jewish traditions,
and the present day social counterparts of these values. The social history
of bread in the Islamic world, from Ottoman times to the Turksih Republic.
The changing meanings of bread in a globalizing world. A critique of the
paradoxical story of poverty and new lifestyles.

An intimate look at the Gypsy refugees in a Belgrade suburb who make a
living by transforming Citroën's classic 2cv and Dyana cars into Mad Max
-like recycling vehicles, which they used to collect cardboard, bottles and
scrap metal. These modern horses are much more efficient than the
cart-pushing competition, but even more important - they also mean freedom,
hope and style for their crafty owners. Even the car batteries are used as
power generators in order to get some light, watch TV and recharge mobiles.
Almost an alchemist's dream comes true! But the police don't always find
these strange vehicles funny.

THE ESCAPE is a film about compassion as "the secret of our existence as a
human race". The renowned Dutch author Jan de Hartog (1914) had to flee
Holland in April 1943 to escape capture by the Germans. A barren journey
brought him via Belgium and France to Switzerland, back to France, across
the Pyrenees to Spain and eventually through Gibraltar to London. Jan de
Hartog (who lives in Houston, TEXAS) while writing the manuscript of a
novella about this important period in his life, tells this exciting story
to his friends.

On the life of George Seferis as a diasporic writer and literary figure.
Greek poet, essayist, and diplomat who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in
1963. Seferis is considered to be the most distinguished Greek poet of the
pre-war generation of the 1930s. In his work Seferis combined the language
of everyday speech with traditional poetic forms and rhythms. Seferis spent
much of his life outside Greece in diplomatic service. Recurrent theme in
his poetry is exile and nostalgia for the Mediterranean and his birthplace,
Smyrna.

Dr. Munci Kalayoglu is a surgeon who lives in the United States who has
managed to preserve his ties to his own country. His work in liver
transplants in particular has received recognition and he was noted in
Turkey for doing the liver transplant of Sadri Alisik.
Both his colleagues' and his patients' testimonies confirm that he is an
excellent surgeon. But Dr. Munci is modest, devoted, full of love,
hard-working, and everything else he ought to be. He manages to find time
for everything and everyone, and he is a real person who succeeds in living
a happy life even among all the sick patients surrounding him.

The famous master of pandomime, Arsen Poladov, an Armenian Kurd, spent
approximately a month in Diyarbakir in May 2003 giving pandomime lessons.
It was his first time in Diyarbakir, his first opportunity to overcome a
lifetime of longing for this city.
The film crew were there, too, with their camera, and the director kept the
camera running each time he ran encoutnered him.
After losing Arsen in March 2004, he wanted to make a documentary
commemorating Arsen using these encounters as a starting point.A personal
text describing his encounters with Arsen and his "Diyarbakir Days"
accompanies the documentary.

Vediha Torun. The owner of a house in Foca, Izmir, inherited from her
family. The house was aquired during the population exchange between Turkey
and Greece. Vediha and her sister's family came here from Limni. Their
mother waited her whole life for the original Greek owners of the house to
appear, expecting that they might come to visit their house. The rose bush
in the garden dates back to their times. Author Mine Sogut tells the story
of an elderly Greek woman who lived in this house and a solitary little boy
whose lives interlink at some point in her story entitled, "It was as if a
miracle was going to happen".

chef, entrepreneur and Director of the Home for Psychologically Challenged
Men.
This is a story full of optimism, snails, ostriches, silk, charity, soy
bread, schizophrenics, foreign investors, Western hunters, misery and
compassion.

Published in Paris in 1954, "The Story of O" was an immediate best-seller
and literary scandal: an elegantly written S&M fantasy that had all the
hallmarks of being and autobiographical account of outrageous erotic
exploits, written by the pseudonymous Pauline Réage.
In 1994 Dominique Aury, a mild-mannered editor for France's prestigious
Gallimard press, revealed her authorship. Pola Rapaport explores Aury's
inspiration, recreating the world of 50's literary Paris and setting against
dramatic sequences that bring the infamous book to life.
The author as well as various French intellectuals expound on the thorny
relationship between sexuality and power, submission and freedom, liberation
and non-being.

Inspired by the French phenomenon of 'single-class' schools ÊTRE ET AVOIR
charts the life of a small one-class village school over the course of one
academic year, and takes a warm and serene look at primary education in the
French heartlands.
A dozen youngsters, aged 4-10, are brought together in one classroom and
taught every subject by one single teacher of extraordinary dedication.
A master in quiet authority, schoolteacher Georges Lopez patiently navigates
the children towards adolescence, cooling down their arguments and listening
to their problems.

This documentary is about the lives of two mentally retarded children, 31
and 33 year-olds, and Havva and Israfil Bayram, a couple that care for them
with great love. Havva and Israfil Bayram cope with this heart wrenchingly
painful situation with commitment to life. These severely mentally retarded
children were born from a marriage that was forced by the family elders.
Their sincere account of how they overcome these difficulties is an example
for all of humanity. This film will deeply affect and disturb viewers. It
achieves a universal value by demonstrating the power of love.

Once upon a time there was a couple which were deeply in love with each
other. For a long time they hoped for a baby who did not come. They had
consulted, answered stupid questions, passed of the cruel tests, without any
result and no rational explanation. The baby did not come, and it was all
that one could say. One day they have the idea to address directly to this
absence.

Ibo works as a public announcement officer, a municipal tea maker, a farmer,
….., ….., etc. in a small town. He is 45 years old and has 5 jobs. He works
in this many jobs in order to fulfill a dream that almost no one else around
him believes.
Almost as if to spite those that claim, "What kind of a dream could we
possibly have in this small town?", Ibo turns alternately into a
hard-working ant and then into a fun-loving cricket in his struggle to
achieve his dreams.
He dreams, and then he works incessantly to accomplish his dreams.
He claims his life is "in harmony", but his friends say that he is an
instrument that is out of tune.
This is the story of announcer, teaman, farmer, …., …., Ibrahim with his
dreams, ideals, and his life of "harmony".

A day in the life of 11 year-old child worker, Asil. He wakes up at 4:00 am
each morning to go work carrying loads in the market. After work, he studies
and goes to school. Asil has to support the family by working and going to
school. The aim of shooting this film was to assist Asil's parents. These
circumstances and the low quality of education at the school that serves his
social position result in Asil's level of education being lower than that of
his peers.

Even though the main subject of this film is about cobblers and
industrialization, the purpose of this film is not to show how a pair of
shoes is cobbled or produced. Sicaksular is a small bazaar in the middle of
Eskisehir city. The cobblers work in huts located alongside two narrow paths
of this bazaar. Lots of the cobblers can not fit into the huts. The
narration in this film is about how industrialization could affect cobblers.
The film begins on a summer morning and ends on a winter evening. The
industrialization in the film takes place in between the two parts. The main
characteristic of this documentary is there is no narrator. All the
narration is the film itself. Natural sounds, sound effects and music were
used to support the visual structure. All characters, events and places
(except the television studio) are real in the film. The structure of the
film was edited from the view of the director's experimental and poetic
understanding.

Abilbek Tashtanbayev has been working in animal husbandry since the age of
17. For 30 years he has continued in his chosen profession. Summer or
winter, he never comes down from the mountains. His sons continue in their
father's footsteps. His two children are always by his side, helping him.
>From sunrise to evening, one shepherds the horses, one takes care of the
cows and sheep, and the third son carries grass to the animals without rest.
His wife and daughter in law have also become accustomed to this way of
life.
This film reflects the daily life of a family in Suusamir. Not everyone
could cope with such arduous circumstances.
The film was filmed in the Suusamir province Sarala-Saz plateau in winter.

Brought up in separate cultures, three lives that unite in Istanbul with
similar emotions. Through the lives of three women, the film explores and
defines the sense of alienation we all experience sometimes, and that some
of us experience always. The film seeks answers to the questions, "Does a
foreigner always remain foreign?", "Does going from East to West or from
West to East or staying put where you are change the fact that you are a
foreigner?".
