Komünizmi yaşam felsefesi olarak benimseyerek tüm düşünceleri sanatına yansır; bu nedenle sürekli olarak polis tarafından takip edilir; yaptığı her eylem, yazdığı veya söylediği her şey devletin yakın gözetimi altındadır. İkinci Dünya Savaşı yılları boyunca, dünya çapında tanınmış şair Nazım Hikmet, komünist düşünceleri nedeniyle tekrar tutuklanır. Bu sefer askeri mahkeme onu yirmi sekiz yıl hapis cezasına çarptırır. Uzun hapis süreci boyunca, hapishane koşullarını bir okul ve atölyeye dönüştürür. Böylesine karanlık bir dönemi yaşarken bile, özgür düşüncenin olduğu bir dünya hayal ederek cesaretini ve tutkusunu korumaya devam eder ve ölümsüz eserler yaratır.

This is a story of the great Turkish poet Nazim Hikmet, the poet of struggle and combat, the poet of passion and love. Having adopted communism as his life philosophy, all his ideas are reflected in his art; and thus he is continuously chased by the police; any action he takes, anything he writes or says is under the close scrutiny of the state. During the Second World War, the worldwide reputable poet Nazim Hikmet was put under arrest because of his communist ideas again. This time the military court sentenced him for twenty eight years. During his long imprisonment, he transforms the conditions of prison into a school and workshop. Living such a dark period he still keeps his courage and passion by creating immortal works imagining a world with freedom of thought.
