Turkish Delights takes the audience on a fascinating journey to Turkey in the 1960s, a time when Western rock ’n’ roll collided with the rich musical traditions of Anatolia. In this era, marked by social and cultural change, young Turkish musicians began integrating Western influences into their own traditional sounds. The result was a unique musical fusion that left a lasting mark on the Turkish music scene.

The documentary follows the footsteps of four music researchers – Marthy Coumans, Gökhan Aya, Marcel Siegmund, and Rob Vermijs – who, in 2001, set out to meet the forgotten pioneers of Turkish rock ’n’ roll. Traveling across Turkey, they collected rare recordings and spoke with artists who played a decisive role at the time. The film tells the stories of these musicians who, despite difficult circumstances – such as limited access to instruments and recording technology – launched a new musical movement.

Among the artists portrayed in the film are Erkin Koray, often referred to as the “father of Turkish rock,” and Gökçen Kaynatan, one of the first musicians in Turkey to experiment with synthesizers. The legendary beat band Mavi Işıklar and the group Apaslar, known for their innovative blend of Western music and Turkish folklore, are also featured.

Through rare concert footage and archival material, the film paints a vivid picture of this era. Turkish Delights gives a voice to the Turkish rock scene of the 1960s and shows how these artists created a new musical identity for their country.

Relevance of the Film:

Turkish Delights is more than just a music documentary – it is a cultural time capsule that offers insight into the history and creative processes of a generation that, through its music, both preserved traditions and absorbed international influences. The film appeals to anyone interested in music history, cultural change, and the creation of new identities in times of societal transformation.
