In the early 1990s, a circus performer visited a village in Bursa, Turkey.
Everyone in the village, including the factory gatekeeper, went to watch the
show. Faik, one of the workers, stayed behind to keep an eye on the silk
handkerchief factory. As he hears strange noises echoing through the large
factory, he springs into action and catches a young child thief.
Director Statement
Silk Handkerchief is not only about a child, but about the fragility of a world
seen through his eyes. Inspired by a short story by Sait Faik, I reimagined the
narrative through my personal sense of solitude and curiosity. Visually, I
merged the atmosphere of a dark noir film with a modern character-driven
storytelling approach. I chose to construct the main character through the lens
of another — exploring how love can push someone to the very edge of themselves,
revealing how delicate and pure that feeling can be. I aimed to build a
cinematic language centered not on dialogue but on silence, because some
emotions speak only through gazes, empty spaces, and time. The black-and-white
aesthetic creates a timeless connection while allowing the viewer to project
their own feelings into the narrative. Silk Handkerchief was meant to feel like
being lost in a memory.
