Emre Şafak (director, cinematographer, editor) is a PhD candidate in Electrical Engineering at Northeastern University. His interest in the visual arts, in which he is entirely self-taught, started over five years ago, with photography. He was briefly drawn towards colorful landscapes, after which he discovered photojournalism and its power to communicate (especially with an explanatory text). During his formative period he studied the works of the celebrated Magnum agency’s photographers, most notably that of Sebastião Salgado and Philip-Jones Griffiths. This resulted in his gaining a penchant for naturalism and simplicity. Not long afterwards, he bought a camcorder, and recorded his travels with the same Belgesel approach he uses in photography. It was at this time he learned to edit video. Later, he decided to make fiction films after realizing that photography, while very fulfilling, would not allow him to reach a wider audience or express extended ideas. Determined to make films, he learned as much as possible by reading, watching and discussing with other film-makers, in order to be as self-sufficient as possible. After a few years of theoretical preparation, he decided to make his first film; a short drama entitled “That’s Funny, Isn’t It?” Not counting the auditions, over thirty people were involved with the production of this film, all working pro bono. He recently completed shooting his second short film, “Women with Knife #5”, and is in pre-production for his third, “Once There Was, Once There Wasn’t”, to be shot later this year.
