Today, “APPLE” has became a symbol of the digital world and has started to be
perceived as its arche. In this narrative, the apple has been reversed and
beomes a symbol of desire, greed and life of the human. As it is in the famous
Anaxagoras apple-apple spermata, “everything contains a bit of everything else”.
In that context, the movie brings together the bits of human will with dogmatic,
narratives and scrutinizes them.
“ELMA” (APPLE) is an experimental film which is black and white and has no
dialogue. The film approaches to the human weaknesses and human frailty through
known myths with a metaphor of an apple. In the film, the weakness caused by
desires for matter is described with the figure of woman and man, on the other
hand with two children chasing pleasure jealousy and desire to achieve are
reflected like in “Abel and Cain”. The offering which is sacrified for the boy
describes the sexist and alienating structure that ignores woman, moreover
accepts the idea of burying girls just because of being girl and further does
not values woman as much as offerings. Also human portraits are reflecting the
silence of the societies that are ablivious to these situations. The religious
ceremony which is performed independently from all religions emphasizes the
human weakness which is sanctifying death and doomed to be extinct. At the end
the apple grows and gets mature, sometimes it moves forward and sometimes it is
bitten, sometimes it rots and then dies. As Anoxogoras said, the apple which
exists in everything, again and again, in different times and different places,
it continues to symbolize the same situations over and over again.
