Küçük bir kız çocuğunun dev bir gözün kirpiklerinin altında büyüme hikayesi…
Kayıp, yas ve dönüşüme dair…
A little girl grows up under the eyelashes of a big eye… A story about loss,
grief and transformation…
Eyelash is a deeply personal film for me.
Until now, I have always told other people’s stories through my documentaries -
but for the first time, I am sharing my own.
About four and a half years ago, my father passed away. To me, he was always a
watchful presence - a giant eye that saw, protected, and looked after me, no
matter where I was in the world. His final days were marked by silence, and
during that time, I found myself looking into his eyes, trying to understand him.
That experience eventually gave birth to this animation - the story of a little
girl growing up under the eyelashes of a giant eye. In Turkish, we have a saying
- May your eyelash never touch the ground, which we say out of love and
protection. In the film, we witness how an eyelash (kirpik) transforms the
little girl’s life.
Combining my passion for drawing with my background in directing, I chose to
illustrate the entire film frame by frame myself. It became a way to tell my
story through my own lines-without using a single word, because grief is
universal.
My father’s passing made me realize how uncomfortable people often are when
talking about death and grief.
But I believe that people only truly die when we forget them. I made this film -
a story of loss, mourning, and transformation - because I wanted to share my own
journey, and in doing so, offer hope and connection to others who may feel alone
in their pain.
I sincerely hope that this film, born from my heart, touches the hearts of those
who watch it.
