Kışyarı, Kayseri’nin Pınarbaşı ilçesine bağlı Hanyeri köyünde gerçekleştirilen
bir gelenektir. Köy, coğrafi konumundan dolayı kışları sert ve soğuk
geçirmektedir. Kış mevsiminin Mart ayı sonlarında etkisini azaltması köylülere
baharı ve umudu müjdeler. Soğukların az da olsa azalmasıyla, belirledikleri
günün gecesi unutulmuş kapılar ardına saklanmış gelenek gerçekleştirilir.
Midwinter is a tradition held in the village of Hanyeri, in the Pınarbaşı
district of Kayseri, Turkey. Due to its geographical location, the village
experiences harsh and cold winters. The waning of winter in late March heralds
the arrival of spring and renewed hope for the villagers. When the cold weather
subsides, even just a little, the tradition hidden behind forgotten doors is
carried out on the night of the appointed day.
Kışyarı marked the first time in my directorial journey that I pointed the
camera toward the memory of a landscape, the rhythm of a tradition, and the
transformation of a season. What I witnessed in Hanyeri Village was not merely a
ritual; it was a profound narrative about nature, time, and communal resilience.
In this mountain village, winter is not just a season; it is a defining
character in the lives of its people. And the villagers bid farewell to this
character through a theatrical ceremony.
I chose to shape the documentary with a cinematic language because the surreal
and nature-bound structure of the ritual demanded more than a straightforward
narrative. I tried to capture the depth of the cold, the echo of the bells, and
the nocturnal rhythm of the ceremony through a poetic visual style. The laughter
behind the scarves of the young boys playing women, the glances shared from
behind half-opened doors, and the windswept geography of the village all formed
the emotional backbone of the film.
With Kışyarı, I didn’t just aim to document a tradition; I wanted the audience
to feel it, to touch it. This film is a poem about people who know how to smile
together in the face of a harsh winter.
